Fruit Leather

Tasty fruit roll-ups you can make at home!

3 cups of fruit (ie strawberries, apples, peaches, pears, nectarines, blueberries, etc)
1/8 to 1/4 cup of fruit juice
Peel, core and slice fruit. Place in a blender with juice and blend until smooth, then place in a saucepan over medium heat for 5 minutes. Let cool and place plastic wrap over a baking sheet. Pour the puree onto the wrap, keeping away from the edges. Spread as thin as possible with a spatula. Turn oven on lowest possible heat, or even just the pilot light. You basically want it to be warm in there, not hot. Leave baking sheet in oven for 6-8 hours  (don’t worry, the plastic wrap doesn’t melt). Remove from oven and roll up the dried fruit and plastic wrap like a jelly roll. To serve, cut the roll into 1-inch sections and peel off the wrap.
Strawberries were on sale this week and both Tony and I bought a couple of baskets of them, not realizing the other had bought some too. So we had a lot of strawberries to use up! I decided to make these fruit rolls, and they were such a big hit with the kids. The whole roll was gone in less than a day. I don’t even think Tony got a chance to taste them, but I had some and they were really good. I was a little worried about using plastic wrap because of chemicals leaching into the food, but I guess it’s at such a low temperature it’s probably ok. Still, I think to be on the safe side I might try wax paper or parchment paper next time. I hear they work too so we’ll see.

  1. I love your blog! We have similar ways with ingredients, clean, healthy & very tasty. I don’t usually buy my kids fruit leather, but I would absolutely make this recipe. Great job 🙂

if your worried about plastic melting i do not think wax paper will be much better. Try parchment paper or a silicon baking mats….also since its a low temp you can use brown paper bag for that.

I wasn’t really worried about it melting though, I was more concerned about chemicals.

I’m going to make some of these tonight with a bunch of frozen fruit I had laying around in my freezer and I’ll use parchment, just in case 🙂 I have the fruit thawing on my counter right now!

How long do these stay fresh? I am a single grad student, so I like to make up a bunch of food all at one time whenever possible! I can’t wait to try this!

Since there are no preservatives it would only last a few days at room temp, but if you store it in the fridge or freezer it should last several months.

Do you use any juice? Or should you use juice to match the fruit you are using?

Any kind of juice should work fine. I usually use apple juice, but you can definitely experiment with different flavours.

Does keeping your oven on for that amount of time become engergy wasteful and/or expensive?

I’d imagine it probably is if you do it regularly. If so you might want to invest in a food dehydrator instead.
