It’s hard to believe the 2014 Winter Olympics are just around the corner. It doesn’t seem like it was that long ago that our city of Vancouver hosted the winter games in 2010. Has it really been almost 4 years? I hunted down photos from that exciting time and was surprised how young my boys look. It really has been a long time now that I look back. Here we are waiting to see the torch pass by our town.
Bennett was only 17 months old, and Cole was about 3 1/2. They didn’t really understand much about what was going on, but I think they appreciated that it was something pretty special.
You could feel the excitement vibrating through the crowd, and everywhere you looked there were people proudly wearing the colours of our flag. There was a long stream of red and white all the way down the road.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people gathered together in our town before. It was pretty amazing.
Well, at least I thought it was amazing. The boys were ready for a nap.
That was the end of the boys’ experience with the Olympics that year, but Tony and I got to go to the bronze men’s hockey game. We left the boys with a sitter and headed downtown for the big game. I thought there were a lot of people in our town the day the torch came by, but that was nothing compared to what awaited us in downtown Vancouver. The streets were packed full of excited, wild, happy people. And the excitement was so infectious. Even though I wasn’t much of an Olympic fan before, I couldn’t help but feel pumped about going to an actual Olympic event. Tony was really thrilled, because he loves hockey. I mean, he really loves hockey. He buys an old car almost every year so he can pimp it up in Canucks colours for the play-offs. Needless to say, seeing an Olympic hockey game was a pretty big deal to him. I’ll admit it was a lot of fun, even for me, who is usually rolling her eyes at her crazy hockey fan husband.
Now that the boys are a little older, I think they’ll find the Olympics more interesting. Cole has already ordered his free Team Canada toque from the box of Cheerios and can’t wait to wear it.
